Dental Implants Torre del Mar and Vélez-Málaga

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots used as a permanent replacement when one or more teeth have been lost. Implants are small titanium screws that are placed directly in the jawbone. The implant acts as a stable support for replacement teeth. This could be in the shape of crowns, bridges or secured dentures.

First of all, if there are damaged teeth, they will be extracted and then the implants will be placed.

Once the implants are placed, we need a period of time, between 6-8 weeks, to have them integrated with the bone (osseointegration). This is the process that the body needs in order to integrate the implant directly, solidly and durably into the jaw bone. A correct osseointegration will improve functionality and long-term results.

After the osseointegration process, start the second phase of the treatment, consisting of the placement of the crowns (visible portion of the dental piece). At Clínica Dental Herrera, since 2014 we are committed to the use of metal-free crowns. To carry out this stage, it is necessary that the patient visit our clinic at least twice, the first one to take impressions and the second to place the final crown. Regarding taking impression, we are pioneers in what the digital field refers to, so we have different types of intraoral scanners such as 3SHAPE, CEREC, SIRONA and ITHEROS. In cases where we talk about large and complex rehabilitations, intermediate tests may have to be done to ensure the success of the treatment.

It is important to know that when the pieces we want to replace are visible (incisors, canines or premolars), there is the possibility that the patient leaves, from the day of the surgery in which his implants are placed, with temporary theeth, which It is known as immediate loading. These theeht, although they do not allow a correct chewing, do guarantee that the aesthetics of the patient is not affected.

Immediate Loading. Same day dental implants

As we have mentioned before, implant placement has an essential phase for success, osseointegration. Here, the bone structure must be adapted to the implanted model, so that they can be integrated and provide the correct sustainability of the work that is subsequently placed.

The time needed to complete the implant treatment ranges between 6-8 months, however, with immediate-loaded dental implants, the patient can leave the Clinic with the temporary theeth placed (no one will notice the difference in which refers to aesthetics although it cannot be given the same utility as with definitive dentures). This type of technique will not compromise the success rate.

Although it is a highly requested option, it should be noted that there are some cases in which the use of immediate loading is not recommended (for example, patients which do not have bone structure adequate in terms of quality or quantity).

When the doctor determines the feasibility of placing the immediate load and the patient so decides, it is important to have several cares like not making sudden movements and intake a soft diet.

Once the osseointegration is finished, the immediate loading will be replaced by the final crowns that will already allow the patient to live a completely normal life.

Dental restorations Pro Arch

It is a new technology specialized in complete restorations for edentulous patients (without teeth).

The idea of this type of treatment is the replacement of missing teeth with a complete dental bridge supported only by four or six dental implants per arch.

The innovative technique has clear advantages for the patient, including:

  • Duration of the treatment: the Proarch technique allows an extraordinary saving of time because everything is done on the same day. The temporary prosthesis or immediate loading can be anchored to the implants right after placement. In this way the patient have his mouth with all his dental pieces on the same day. We can say that at the aesthetic level it is a totally successful technique from the first moment due to its integrity in the assembly.
  • Cost of treatment: there are several factors that allow this technique to be cheaper than the placement of unit implants. On the one hand, only 4-6 implants will be placed per arch, and on the other, the use of bone grafts and highly expensive materials is avoided, which will result in a marked reduction in the cost of treatment.

It is of vital importance to know that, in the postoperative period, the patient must follow a soft diet so that the biological osseointegration process is carried out with all the guarantees. When this stage is completed, the final prosthesis will be placed, which can be either a resin hybrid or totally zirconium, taking into account the needs of each patient.

Dental implants with bone graft

What happens if you don’t have the right amount of bone structure for an implant?

Many patients come to the Clinic with low bone volume to be able to place implants. It is common in people who long time ago lost some of their pieces and who have suffered some periodontal disease.

In this situation the solution is achieved through the placement of bone graft. Although in this type of surgery the complexity is slightly higher, the results are totally satisfactory since the bone used causes the implants to be perfectly integrated with the mandibular bone.

There are different types of bone grafts that are classified into:

  • Autografts, coming from the patient
  • Xerografts, whose origin is of animal origin
  • Allografts and / or grafts of artificial origin, usually the origin is synthetic

Zygomatic Implants

Zygomatic implants are used in patients with severe atrophy, that is, without sufficient quality or quantity of bone enough to support normal dental implants and for whom, bone regeneration techniques, such as grafts or sinus lift, do not have the expected results.

These are implants whose length is higher than a normal implant, being as an alternative to conventional implantological treatment.
