What is a Root Canal Therapy?
Root canal treatment (also called Endodontics) is needed when the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected through tooth decay or damaged by an injury to your mouth. This infection may spread through the root canal system, which could eventually lead to an abscess, causing a great deal of discomfort. If root canal treatment is not carried out, the tooth may need to be taken out.
Our dentists can perform root canal treatment to stop the infection from spreading and will preserve as much of your tooth as possible. Using specific techniques and advanced equipment, you will receive a local anaesthetic and the treatment overall should feel no different to having an ordinary filling placed. The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection. It is common to place a crown on top of the tooth at the end of the procedure, to provide extra strength. Treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic so should be pain-free, and will require one or two visits to the practice.
Teeth at the front of the mouth commonly have one root with one root canal, while teeth at the back have a more complex system of two or more roots, each with one or two root canals. For that reason the length of the procedure will depend on which tooth is being treated and how complex its root canal system is, but on average treatment lasts one to two hours. If you need more than one appointment, you will be given a temporary filling to keep food particles and bacteria out of the root canal. The success rate for endodontic treatment is between 85 and 95%.
Doctors who develop this dental specialty are called endodontists. At Clínica Dental Herrera we have Dr. Irene Pérez.
When do you need a Root Canal Treatment?
Endodontics may be highly required when a nerve damage has been caused. These cases are very common, such as: deep caries that attack the nerve, big reconstructions of the teeth that display a pulpitis, big injuries that leave the nerve fully exposed, situations of high hypersensitivity to heat and / or cold during the chewing process, etc.
Endodontics is done to preserve teeth, and avoid extracting the piece due to the deterioration or damage they have.
In addition, it is the last resort for you to keep the teeth that have suffered a problem in the nerve of the tooth
There is nothing better than your own tooth, and because extraction is a definitive method or treatment, in the necessary situations endodontics is the first treatment or method that must be contemplated.
This dental treatment is carried out with local anesthesia, so you will not feel any pain.
Once the patient has been anesthetized in the area, doctors begin to remove the diseased tissue by caries until they can access the nerve, depending on the tooth being treated.
During the process, the doctor will decide whether or not it will be necessary for the patient to take antibiotics, either before or after treatment, so the Root Canal Treatment will be more effective, or they can be taken just to prevent secundary effects of the treatment.
