Orthodontic Torre del Mar and Vélez-Málaga
Orthodontics is a special branch of dentistry that deals with preventing and correcting the irregularities of the jaws and teeth.
What is orthodontic treatment?
Although there are several types of orthodontics, they all have the same mission: to apply force, in a measured, prolonged and controlled way, to achieve a permanent movement of the teeth towards a more aesthetic and functional position.
Orthodontic treatments can be the following:
- Interceptives: They are made when the child is still in temporary dentition (or in a renewal course). Normally in these situations they are used to solve the malocclusions (poor alignment of the teeth or inability to fit the upper and lower teeth).
- Corrective: This treatment is carried out when the previous treatment has not been executed or is not efficient enough to prevent malocclusion. It is recommended to start with this treatment at an age between 10 and 12 years old, since it may take between one and a half years and three years to complete.
- Fixed: This treatment is one of the most important, because it allows the sliding of individual way to each and every one of the dental pieces towards any trajectory of the space.
Focusing on fixed orthodontics, we can find differents types which have some “pros and cons” that we have to considerer when we are making our choice.
First, we will speak about the brackets, pieces made of metal that support the arch (wire) that causes tooth slippage.
As an alternative, we have the aesthetic brackets that, despite having the same function, are usually more in demand just for aesthetic reasons (they are less noticeable than the fully metallic ones).
There are different types of aesthetic braces that are classified according to the material from which they are made. In Clínica Dental Herrera, Dr. Román opts for ceramic brackets that mimic the color of the tooth. Unlike other aesthetic brackets, they are totally ceramic, with no visible metal parts.
It is also worth highlighting the Damon Clear ™ or Clarity SL ™ self-ligating brackets that shorten the treatment time as they combine the advantages of aesthetic brackets with the advantages of low friction of the self-ligating brackets.
These types of treatments are highly recommended for adolescents and adults for whom, the concern for personal image, usually plays a decisive role in deciding whether or not to do the treatment.
Invisible Orthodontics (Invisalign)
Despite the aesthetic bracket treatments that we have mentioned, at Clínica Dental Herrera our commitment to invisible orthodontics comes from the hand of the Invisalign® technique, the last method that appeared in the market that has meant a significant change in the organization and development of this type of treatments.
Dr. Manuel Román, head of orthodontics at Clínica Dental Herrera, is a member of the Invisalign Advantage Elite Group, and holder of the Invisalign Diamond (maximum national and international recognition in this type of orthodontics). He has also been a trainer of doctors who use this technique in their clinics.
Invisalign® is a new system that is used to align the teeth and improve the smile. It works with a series of custom-made, transparent and removable aligners that will have to be changed every 15 days.
Each aligner is slightly different from the previous one so that the teeth move slowly and be able to reach the desired position.
The aligners must be worn all day, except to eat and brush your teeth, which makes it easier for us to have proper hygiene.
The main advantage of this system is aesthetics. These are practically invisible and they are removable aligners (they can be removed and replaced).
Although you should wear them all day except to eat and brush their teeth, Invisalign has removable devices, so you can also take them out for special occasions (wedings, meetings..), meaning they fit around your lifestyle.
The aligners apply very mild and controlled forces. This implies greater comfort so that we practically do not notice anything.
Another advantage of this treatment is the small amount of visits we will make to the orthodontist, because, if all goes well, we should only go every two or three months for review. This is because when we go to the Clinic we are given a certain number of aligners that allow us to space appointments according to needs. At Clínica Dental Herrera there are several patients from outside the province and, even, from outside the country, who are doing Invisalign treatment with us.
How does Invisalign treatment work?
During your free consultation you’ll have the opportunity to discuss your treatment with Dr. Manuel Roman or Dra. Clara Rodríguez and ask all your questions. A 3D scan can be taken of your teeth to show potentially how your smile could look after Invisalign treatment.
We’ll start by checking your smile to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy before taking impressions of your teeth. These are then used to plan your treatment using Invisalign’s innovative ClinCheck software.
Your ClinCheck will show you how your teeth should move during your Invisalign treatment – as well as your all-important end result.
At your next appointment we’ll fit your first set of aligners. In some cases we’ll need to attach small tooth-coloured buttons to your teeth to help with certain movements and the improvements in your smile will start immediately as you leave the clinic
We’ll see you approximately every one to two months to check your progress and give you your new sets of aligners. If you have any questions in between we’re always available by telephone or email.
When you reach the end of your treatment we’ll provide you with fixed and/or removable retainers to help you to maintain your fantastic results for years to come.
Lingual braces act in the same way as regular braces, using brackets and wires to gently reposition the teeth. The main difference, however, is that they fiinest and are placed on the back of the teeth, so they are not immediately obvious.
Dr Román and Dra Rodriguez uses a 3D computer program to customize braces, so that every wire and every bracket closely fits on the tooth, to give maximum comfort, although, it normally requires an adaptation period of about 15-20 days
Lingual braces can not be removed, but they avoid the damage to the enamel that usually causes the conventional orthodontic, like descalcification or stains.
Low friction orthodontics
This treatment is based on a technique that works the least friction between the wire and the bracket, making the movement more physiological and faster.
Nowadays, due to the implementation of low friction dental methods, patients get treatments with a shorter duration in the orthodontists chair.
We can say, that orthodontic treatment is very useful for the aesthetic problems that we may have in our teeth. However, orthodontics can also help to solve problems found in the bite, teeth, and even in the jaw that, in the future, will bring many physical and internal problems.
